In Taiwan!

Arrived yesterday in Taiwan after missing my scheduled flight!  I should learn to read the ticket correctly. Yesterday was a whirlwind day of planes, trains and taxis.

I’m here with Marion Batille of ABC3D fame and we’re making two presentations in two different cities about creating pop-up books.  Our first event was yesterday in Taichung, and our second is today, here in Kaohsiung.

The event is organized by the local United Daily News Corp. and is curated by private collector Michael Yang.  Michael has the most extensive collection of pop-up books I have ever seen!  He is so passionate about the genre that he’ll sit on eBay searching out rare editions to complete a series of books if necessary. Marion and I were privileged to tour the Taichung exhibit before it opened and were astounded at some of the books we saw, including paper engineers I’d never heard off!  I plan to post a gallery of trip images after we’ve sorted through the pictures, but in the meantime here’s one of Michael rearranging an exhibit, and Ray showing off his pop-up of the Taichung Pavilion.

Marion and I spoke about our individual approaches to paper engineering for about two hours with the help of an interpretator, and then signed books for a very enthusiastic group of pop-up book fans.

Our hosts are being so generous that we couldn’t me made to feel more at home!  Thank you everyone!
