Report From Yinchuan, China

Posted by Ray Marshall on October 14, 2014 in Making Pop-ups, Paper Blossoms, Pop-Up Book Events, Pop-Up Books |

From October 6th until October 11th I was the guest of some great hospitality in Yinchuan, China.  Yinchuan is in the north of China, up near Inner Mongolia.

Myself, David Carter, and Colette Fu, were there for the second appearance of the traveling pop-up exhibit that began in Shanghai. Over a two week period we read, showed, and made pop-ups with the exhibit attendees.  I was asked to visited two local kindergarten schools and a high school to demonstrate some of my pop-up skills to a new generation of paper engineers.

The day before I left Yinchuan I was invited to attend and present at a special fund raising ceremony for three local children’s charities.  I felt very touched when three copies of “Paper Blossoms” were auctioned off for over six times the recommended retail price!  I also got to personally donate a copy of each of my “Paper Blossoms” books to each of the charities.

The exhibit was organized by Jenny and Oran, two great ladies who run a local children’s library and bookstore.  They told me a story that has become all too familiar to me, that it’s become very hard to compete with online book sales as a local bookstore.  Their library is wonderfully colorful experience for kids.

After showing the exhibit attendees how to make some simple pop-ups we invited children from the local schools to make an entry for our pop-up competition. Simple soon became very elaborate as I saw when I helped judge the entries on the last day.

Yinchuan is known as “Phoenix City” after a mythological story tells how a phoenix saves the city from war by turning itself into a city.  The are many references to the phoenix all over town.  Because of this connection I made a special phoenix pop-up for Jenny and Oran, and presented it to them for their library.

One of the highlights of my trip was going to Helan Mountain to see first hand the centuries old rock carvings adorning the mountain.

I hope to get more pictures of the actual event sent to me soon – stay tuned!

Ray Heads Back To China

Posted by Ray Marshall on October 4, 2014 in Making Pop-ups, Pop-Up Book Events, Pop-Ups |

I will be heading back to China soon for another opportunity to demonstrate my work, read stories, and make pop-ups with the kids!   This time I’ll be going to a city in the north west called Yinchuan.  We always get such a warm welcome and great hospitality that it’s worth all that travel time!

It’s really gratifying that in these days of phone and computer apps we can still be involved in this very hands on art form and that people really enjoy doing it!  Sometimes the most basic paper folds are more bewildering to people than writing computer code!  Definitely the other way around for me!!

I will post a report on my return.  No Twitter in China.

For five great days I got to experience a small part of China in Shanghai.

Myself, David Carter, and Colette Fu, were asked to present and talk about our work.  This was part of an exhibition of pop-up books in the Réel Department Store on West Nanjing Road, an interactive exhibit were people could explore pop-up books by actually opening and closing them and using the pull tabs.  What a great concept!

David, Colette, and I, also got to show some of the hundreds of people that passed through the exhibit how to make simple pop-ups and then take them a step further by adding their own design features.  Jason, the exhibit organizer had a large area for people to display their work and gave out prizes for the best ones.

Ray’s New Book Is Getting Closer!

Posted by Ray Marshall on March 12, 2014 in Making Pop-ups, Pop-Up Books, Pop-Ups |

Time for an overdue update!  I’ve been occupied in many directions lately.  I’ve been finishing up a non pop-up paper project, exploring several other creative ideas, working on my house, and the completion of my next pop-up book!

With much excitement the publishing team and I have sent the books color and artwork changes back to the printer and now eagerly await our new assembled proofs at the end of the month!  As soon as I’m allowed to post pictures and descriptions I will!  The book is due out this fall.

I’m also starting to think about another downloadable pop-up design to post here on my website, hopefully by end of March!  More soon.

Revised “POP-UPS YOU CAN MAKE” Page!

Posted by Ray Marshall on November 13, 2013 in Making Pop-ups |

I’ve been updating my website recently. Consequently there were times when the site wasn’t available as I experimented with my limited knowledge of web coding!  So apologies for that!

As you can see there is now better menu navigation at the top, it’s not perfect, but I’ll perfect it over time.  This will now give me the opportunity to add more articles and material to the site, and for it to be found!!  Not hidden away somewhere.

The big change which has taken a few days is a new “Pop-Ups You Can Make” page. I’ve made this more accessible with a page of images to click on. Now you can see all the pop-up choices without having to scroll down the whole page. I’ve also fixed a couple of broken links and even updated the “Flying Man” pdfs that accidentally still had scanned images left in them!

Check back from time to time to see what’s been added. I’ll also be Tweeting any changes @PopUpGuy.
