I was very surprised and thrilled to hear that Amazon had chosen “Paper Blossoms, Butterflies, and Birds” as one of it’s Editor’s Picks in the “Fun and Quirky” category!!
I’m very excited that “Paper Blossoms, Butterflies, and Birds,” the successor to the original “Paper Blossoms” is finally out! A big thank you to everyone who pre-ordered a copy and patiently waited!
For five great days I got to experience a small part of China in Shanghai.
Myself, David Carter, and Colette Fu, were asked to present and talk about our work. This was part of an exhibition of pop-up books in the Réel Department Store on West Nanjing Road, an interactive exhibit were people could explore pop-up books by actually opening and closing them and using the pull tabs. What a great concept!
David, Colette, and I, also got to show some of the hundreds of people that passed through the exhibit how to make simple pop-ups and then take them a step further by adding their own design features. Jason, the exhibit organizer had a large area for people to display their work and gave out prizes for the best ones.
Much excitement the day before I left for China day over the arrival of the advance copies of “Paper Blossoms, Butterflies, and Birds.” They arrived just in time for me to pop them in my suitcase to take with me. The visitors to the pop-up exhibition were the first to see the new book! Pictures coming soon!
Pre-order “Paper Blossoms, Butterflies, and Birds” through Chronicle Books.
Release date is September 16, 2014.
I feel honored to be one of the paper engineers invited to speak and demonstrate our craft at an upcoming pop-up exhibit in Shanghai!
The exhibit will be running at the Reel Department Store, West Nanjing Road NO.1601, between July 11th and August 22nd. I’ll be there on July 19th and 20th.
The exhibition will display many kinds of pop-up books, feature interactive programs, presentations, and demonstrations.
If you’re reading this in Shanghai please stop by and take a look!
Time for an overdue update! I’ve been occupied in many directions lately. I’ve been finishing up a non pop-up paper project, exploring several other creative ideas, working on my house, and the completion of my next pop-up book!
With much excitement the publishing team and I have sent the books color and artwork changes back to the printer and now eagerly await our new assembled proofs at the end of the month! As soon as I’m allowed to post pictures and descriptions I will! The book is due out this fall.
I’m also starting to think about another downloadable pop-up design to post here on my website, hopefully by end of March! More soon.
I’ve been updating my website recently. Consequently there were times when the site wasn’t available as I experimented with my limited knowledge of web coding! So apologies for that!
As you can see there is now better menu navigation at the top, it’s not perfect, but I’ll perfect it over time. This will now give me the opportunity to add more articles and material to the site, and for it to be found!! Not hidden away somewhere.
The big change which has taken a few days is a new “Pop-Ups You Can Make” page. I’ve made this more accessible with a page of images to click on. Now you can see all the pop-up choices without having to scroll down the whole page. I’ve also fixed a couple of broken links and even updated the “Flying Man” pdfs that accidentally still had scanned images left in them!
Check back from time to time to see what’s been added. I’ll also be Tweeting any changes @PopUpGuy.
This is a really useful pop-up that you can make and adapt for any use – whether it’s an invitation, a birthday or holiday card, or just a fun pop-up scene. The cut out window allows you to see through to the back of the folded pop-up inside. Therefore you can have a ‘before and after’ design.
Once you have made this version make another where you change the shapes and their size. See how far away you can get from my design! NOTE: There is no artwork on the print outs! That’s for you to add!
